Automatic transfer switch installation

The Short AnswerAn automatic transfer switch is the part that connects your generator to your home. It watches the power from the utility, and when it goes out, it switches your home over to the generator by itself, then switches back when the power returns. Every standby generator we install comes with one, wired by a licensed Master Electrician.

How it works

The brains between the grid and your generator

The transfer switch sits next to your electrical panel or meter. When it senses an outage, it tells the generator to start, then moves your home's power over to it, usually within seconds.

It also keeps generator power from flowing back onto the utility lines, which protects the line workers fixing the outage.

Whole home or essentials

Choosing the right switch

Some switches cover your whole electrical panel. Others cover a smaller group of essential circuits. The right one depends on your panel, your generator size and what you want running.

James checks your panel on the free site visit and explains your options in plain language.

Questions about automatic transfer switches

Your generator questions, answered

Does every generator need a transfer switch?
Every standby generator we install has an automatic transfer switch. It's what lets the generator take over by itself, safely.
Can you add a transfer switch to a generator I already have?
Call or text us with what you have. James will tell you plainly whether it makes sense.
Will I lose power while it switches?
Only for a few seconds. The generator needs a moment to start and settle before the switch moves your home over to it.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. We pull it and schedule the inspection with your city or county.
