Atlanta power outage guide

The Short AnswerWhen the power goes out in metro Atlanta, call your power company or check its outage map. Most homes are on Georgia Power (888-891-0938), but many suburbs are served by an EMC. Stay away from downed lines and call 911. Never run a portable generator indoors or in a garage. A permanent standby generator turns on by itself within seconds.

Portable generator safety

Keep it outside, and far away

Portable generators are one of the leading causes of carbon monoxide deaths after storms, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Carbon monoxide has no smell and can kill in minutes.

  • Never run a generator inside your home, garage, basement or shed, even with the doors open.
  • Keep it more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
  • Install battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms near every sleeping area.
  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Connecting to your home's wiring takes a transfer switch, installed by a licensed electrician.

With a standby generator

What happens when the power goes out

A permanent standby generator sits outside your home and is wired through an automatic transfer switch. Generac says it starts within seconds of sensing an outage and shuts itself off when the power comes back.

During a long outage, Generac recommends shutting air-cooled generators down for at least 30 minutes after every 24 hours of running to check and top off the oil. Keep an extra quart of the right oil on hand during storm season.

  • Starts by itself, whether you're home or not
  • Runs on natural gas or propane
  • No cords and no refueling on natural gas
  • Shuts itself off when the power returns
