Historic homes and outage history

Covington's historic districts and recent storms both shape how we plan an install here.

City-run power

Covington runs its own electric utility, the largest residential provider in the city. Snapping Shoals EMC and Georgia Power serve other parts of the area.

Helene outages

During Hurricane Helene, Snapping Shoals EMC had as many as 14,000 customers out, and trees came down on several city streets.

Historic districts

Covington has historic districts around the downtown square, Floyd Street and North Covington, where exterior changes can need review.

Permits in Covington

City of Covington or Newton County?

Homes inside Covington city limits are permitted by the city's Planning and Development department. Homes with a Covington address outside city limits are permitted by Newton County.

In a designated historic district, exterior changes can need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Covington Historic Preservation Commission before a permit is issued. We check placement with you first, then file and schedule the inspection.
