Generator questions, answered straight
The Short AnswerMost homeowners ask the same handful of things: what size they need, what affects the cost, how long it takes, and who takes care of it afterward. The answers are below. If yours isn't here, call or text James at 404-593-6308.
Choosing a generator
What is a home standby generator?
It's a permanent generator that sits outside your home on a pad, a lot like an A/C unit. It runs on natural gas or propane and connects to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. When the power goes out, it starts by itself within seconds. When the power comes back, it shuts itself off.
How is that different from a portable generator?
A portable generator has to be rolled out, started, plugged in and refueled, often in the middle of a storm. A standby generator does all of that on its own, whether you're home or not, and it can power far more of your house.
What size generator do I need?
We install Generac home standby generators from 10 to 28 kW. The right size depends on what you want running during an outage, from just the essentials up to the whole house. James figures that out with you on the free site visit, so you don't pay for more than you need. Compare all 7 sizes.
Can it run my whole house, A/C included?
In many homes, yes, with the right size. Some families only want the essentials covered, like the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, sump pump and one A/C. Either way works, and James will walk you through both.
Do you install commercial generators too?
Yes. We install generators for businesses as well as homes. Learn about commercial generators.
Cost & financing
How much does a generator cost?
Every home is different. The price depends on the generator size, how far it sits from your gas meter and electrical panel, whether you need a propane tank, any panel work, and what your permit requires. After a free site visit, James gives you a written estimate that spells out the equipment, installation and extras. No hidden fees and no pressure.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. The site visit and the written estimate are free, and there's no obligation.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. You can pay over time through Synchrony. Learn about financing.
Installation & permits
What happens at the site visit?
James looks at where the generator can go, checks your electrical panel and your gas service, and goes over local code with you. Then he gives you a written estimate.
How soon can you come out?
Call or text us and we will find a time that works for you. We will give you the date for your free estimate right on the call.
How long does installation take?
We'll give you a timeline with your estimate, based on equipment availability and permit timing where you live.
Where will the generator go?
On a pad outside your home, in a spot that meets code and Generac's clearance rules. We also look for a spot that keeps the gas and electrical runs short and looks tidy.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection with your city or county. You don't have to deal with any of it.
Who does the electrical work?
James Hill, a licensed Georgia Master Electrician (EN219300). We never subcontract.
Fuel
Natural gas or propane?
Both work well. If you have natural gas, we connect to your line. If you don't, we install a propane tank.
Do I have to refuel it?
Not on natural gas. It runs off your gas line for as long as the outage lasts. On propane, it runs off your tank, so you'll keep it filled through your propane company.
Warranty & service
What warranty comes with it?
Every install comes with a 5-year warranty. During promotions, we offer upgraded 7-year and 10-year warranties. Ask when you get your quote.
Does the generator need maintenance?
Yes. Like a car, it needs regular maintenance to be ready when the power goes out. Generac generators also run a short self-test on their own to keep everything working. See maintenance plans.
Who do I call for service or repairs?
Our sister company, Southern Power Experts, handles maintenance and repairs. Schedule a service with Southern Power Experts.
