How long does a Generac install take in Atlanta?

Southern Power Generators · October 2026

The Short AnswerThe install itself is the quick part. Most of the timeline comes from the steps around it: the site visit and estimate, getting the generator, the permit from your city or county, and the final inspection. Permit timing varies a lot between Atlanta-area cities and counties. We give you a timeline with your written estimate.

The steps, start to finish

  1. Call or text us. Tell us about your home and what you want running.
  2. Free site visit. James looks at placement, your panel, your gas service and local code.
  3. Written estimate. Equipment, installation and any extras, all spelled out.
  4. Equipment and permits. Once you say yes, we order your generator and file the permit with your city or county.
  5. Install day. We set the generator, connect the gas and wire the transfer switch, then test it and walk you through how it works.
  6. Inspection. The city or county inspects the work and signs off.

What affects the timeline

  • Your permit office. Every city and county in metro Atlanta has its own process and pace. Some cities, like Brookhaven, require separate electrical and gas permits.
  • Where your home actually is. Many addresses are outside the city on the mailbox. We confirm who issues your permit before we file, so it doesn't bounce.
  • Historic districts and HOAs. If your neighborhood reviews exterior changes, that approval comes first.
  • Gas service. Sometimes the gas meter or line needs an upgrade, and the gas company sets that schedule.
  • Propane. If you need a tank, that's one more piece to set and connect.
  • Equipment. Generac generators can be harder to get right after a big storm, when demand jumps.

How to keep it moving

The best time to get a generator is before you need one. Calling before storm season gives everyone more room. And once you have your estimate, deciding quickly lets us get your permit filed sooner.

Michelle handles the permits and the scheduling, and she'll keep you posted along the way.
